Our Metis Survivors

The Otipemisiwak Metis Government is beginning a deeply meaningful archival project to gathering and honour the stories of Metis Residential School Survivors. Through this work we hope to preserve and share the history our Otipemisiwak Métis Citizens endured in Canada’s residential school system. This is a history that has deeply impacted our citizens, and too often are left out of broader conversations or overlooked.

This Project seeks to create a space for Metis stories to be heard, remembered and respected.

Our people attended these institutions. Our families lived with harms and lasting traumas that residential schools inflicted through generations. The voices, memories, and lived experiences deserve to be heard, preserved, and treated with care and respect.

This project is guided by the stories of Survivors and the intergenerational impacts carried within families. If you feel comfortable, we warmly welcome you to fill out this form so our team can connect with you and continue the conversation about how you wish to be involved in this important work of remembrance and truth-telling.

All personal information and registration will remain confidential.

DEPUTY CAPTAIN ANNOUNCEMENT

Dear Citizens of the Rocky View Métis District,

It is with both humility and a deep sense of responsibility that I share with you that I have accepted the role of Deputy Captain for the Rocky View Métis District.

This transition comes following the passing of our respected leader, Amber Boyd. Amber’s dedication, strength, and unwavering commitment to our citizens and our Métis Nation have left a lasting impact on our district. I step into this role mindful of her leadership and with great respect for the foundation she helped build.

I will serve in the capacity of Deputy Captain on an interim basis supporting the leadership of our district until a new District Captain is formally elected in accordance with our governance process.

Serving our community during this time is an honor. My commitment is to ensure continuity, stability, and open communication as we move forward together. I will continue to support our citizens, uplift our culture, and work collaboratively to advance the priorities that matter most to our families, youth, and Elders.

In this role, I will focus on:

Ensuring transparent and open communication

Supporting cultural programming and community gatherings

Advocating for the needs and voices of our citizens

Building strong partnerships that benefit our district

Our strength as Métis people has always come from our resilience, our kinship, and our shared responsibility to one another. I look forward to walking alongside you as we continue this important work together.

Please feel free to reach out to me directly with your thoughts, ideas, or concerns. Your voice matters, and I am here to serve.

With respect and gratitude,

District Captain - Amber Boyd

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Amber Boyd, District Captain of the Rockyview Métis District of the Otipemisiwak Métis Government — a leader, a colleague, a mentor, and a friend — who passed from cancer far too soon.

Amber carried her title with humility, but she carried her responsibilities with unwavering strength. As District Captain, she was deeply committed to the people she served and to the principles of Métis self-governance. She believed that leadership was not about position or authority, but about service, listening, and doing the hard work even when it was unseen.

Throughout her professional life, Amber demonstrated a rare combination of determination and compassion. She was a tireless advocate for Métis citizens, working to strengthen district governance, improve collaboration, and ensure that Métis voices were not only heard, but respected. She approached challenges thoughtfully, always seeking solutions rooted in fairness, transparency, and community well-being.

Amber’s achievements were not measured solely in meetings chaired, policies advanced, or initiatives completed — though there were many. Her true impact was felt in the way she made people feel seen, supported, and encouraged. She had a way of bringing people together, of finding common ground even in difficult conversations, and of reminding us why the work mattered.

Her courage was perhaps most evident in the way she faced her illness. Even as cancer tested her body, it never diminished her spirit. She continued to care deeply about her community and her colleagues, showing resilience, grace, and an unshakeable commitment to others. In doing so, she taught us one final, powerful lesson about strength.

Amber leaves behind a legacy of leadership grounded in integrity and heart. Her contributions to the Otipemisiwak Métis Government will endure, but so too will the memories of her kindness, her dedication, and her belief in the people around her.

We mourn her loss deeply, but we are grateful — grateful for her service, grateful for her example, and grateful for the time we were given to know her.

Rest in peace, Amber. You will be remembered, you will be missed, and your legacy will live on in the people and communities you helped shape.

Funeral will be held at 1:00pm, Sunday, January 25th, 2026, in Cochrane, AB in the Legacy Hall of the Cochrane Lions Club and event Centre, 109 – 5th Avenue, Cochrane, AB, T4C 0A4

Further information on her service can be found at https://www.mhfh.com/obituaries/Amber-Dawn-Boyd-Nee-Macpherson?obId=46968917
